The Future Noise Environment

Discovering what Ireland’s might sound like in 2050

This project focuses on understanding how noise in Ireland might evolve by 2050 by mapping the future of noise. Researchers are developing advanced models to predict noise from traditional sources like road, rail, and air transport, as well as emerging sources such as electric vehicles, heat pumps, drones, and offshore wind turbines. By combining data collection, scenario planning, and predictive modelling, this stream aims to provide a comprehensive picture of the future noise environment across urban and rural areas.

The work includes:

  • Reviewing existing research to identify trends, methodologies, and knowledge gaps;

  • Collecting and curating robust datasets from monitoring stations, databases, and citizen science initiatives;

  • Developing future noise scenarios in collaboration with stakeholders, considering urban growth, transport policies, and technological change;

  • Building predictive models to forecast population exposure and noise levels for future scenarios;

  • Identifying noise hot spots, which will help inform targeted mitigation strategies in the next research stream on interventions.

This research stream lays the scientific foundation for Noise 2050, helping policymakers and communities anticipate challenges and plan effective interventions to protect health and well-being.
