Citizen Science and Future Noise Monitoring
Engaging communities to map Ireland’s noise today and tomorrow
This part of the project focuses on putting citizens at the heart of noise monitoring in Ireland. By combining advanced noise modelling from the Future Noise Environment research with data collected directly by communities, researchers are developing a participatory approach to understand, measure, and act on environmental noise. The goal is to co-produce a Local Area Noise Action Plan (LANAP) for 2050 in areas where noise is most problematic.
The work includes:
Scoping a future noise monitoring platform: exploring innovative citizen-focused platforms, including the Silencio app, and reviewing best practices from similar initiatives worldwide;
Engaging local communities to measure noise levels, collect environmental data, and contribute directly to scientific research;
Analysing collected data to identify trends, correlations, and impacts on health and quality of life, in collaboration with citizens and stakeholders;
Co-designing a Local Area Noise Action Plan for 2050, integrating citizen-collected data with predictive models from the Future Noise Environment research, to guide effective interventions and policy development.
This research stream demonstrates the power of citizen engagement, linking everyday experiences of noise with evidence-based policy solutions to create healthier, quieter communities.
